How to Choose Your
Doctor in Colorado Springs?
If you and I were playing "Family Feud," I would guess that the top four answers you would think of for how to best pick a Colorado Springs doctor would be:
1. Pick a doctor in Colorado Springs who you think has the most ability (graduated from Harvard, interned at Johns Hopkins, etc.)
2. Pick a Colorado Springs doctor who specializes in your problem
3. Pick a doctor in Colorado Springs whom you get along well with
4. Pick a Colorado Springs doctor who accepts your insurance
Those are All Fantastic, But Have You Considered:
Pick a Colorado Springs doctor that aligns with your health care philosophy
This is, in my opinion, the most important of all. Here's why (this is just one example - this applies to heart disease, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, fybromyalgia, chronic fatigue and more):
If you suffer from headaches, back pain, or neck pain, you have several different types of doctors that you can go to, who will all offer you very different solutions to the same problem. And not all solutions are created equal. Some health care solutions have major side-effects and complications that make your original problem seem like a cool breeze on a hot day compared to your new-found problems.
You could go to a medical doctor (neurologist, physiatrist, surgeon, general practitioner, etc.), osteopathic doctor, chiropractic doctor, homeopathic doctor or naturopathic doctor. Heck, there are even doctors of physical therapy and natural medical doctors. The system is confusing these days, and I think that is a very good thing - it means there is competition, and excellence comes from competition.
I'm a chiropractic doctor, and most people think all we do is adjust the spine and sell long-term care plans:) I know chiropractic doctors who never even adjust the spine and do not dabble in back pain, and others that use lasers and the same machines as medical doctors that cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.
My father-in-law suffered from Sciatica and his first inclination was to go to Harvard-trained neurologist medical doctor who gave him a couple shots, and then offered to perform surgery to move his nerve off of his bone. As the son of a medical doctor, he nearly took his advice. Thankfully, he declined, went to another doctor who game him a few spinal adjustments to re-align his body to the way it was designed, and the pain went away.
Your doctor's philosophy determines your outcome. All doctors (including me) can only practice what they are trained to do, and at the end of the day, health care is a business. Don't be surprised if you go to a surgeon, and he offers you surgery.
So, first things first - interview doctors to see if they align with your philosophy of health care.
